Just a bit ago, I took a break from my morning writing routine to take stock of my independent author’s journey thus far. I have to admit, I couldn’t help but laugh at some of my stumbling in the dark through this maze of options & decision points with almost no background knowledge to help guide my way. Maybe it’s like trying not to laugh while learning how to ice skate.
Anyway, here’s a few milestones, so to speak:
- Spent a good deal of my writing time over the past five years working on one project
- Finished editing & proofreading that novel seven months ago
- Tried to get up to speed on the basics of the independent author world from scratch
- Self-published Pearl Fields and the Oregon Meltdown through Draft2Digital (D2D)
- Learned how to set up my own ad campaigns
- Switched from D2D to Kindle Direct Publishing
- Designed & maintained this website
- Figured out how to convert a digital book to paperback
- Ran a Goodreads Giveaway campaign
- Tried my hand at social media
- Set up a Kindle Countdown Deal for the first week of April
- Learned more about promo stacking than I ever thought possible.
Whew . . . no wonder my head’s been spinning here of late & that’s only a partial list.
So I’m glad I gave myself permission this morning to pause & consider how much I’ve actually accomplished so far instead of using that time to just continue checking off items on my to-do list in preparation for April.
Take a deep breath . . . I finished writing a story I’m truly proud of . . . take a deep breath . . . and released that novel into the world on my own terms . . . take a deep breath . . .
Till next time,
Drew
