Nothing like waking early in the morning with a writing fire in my belly, ready to check off another goal related to my serialized novel Core Haven & then move on—only to realize that I’d neglected to read the fine print from the blue “Learn more” link on the Kindle Vella dashboard below the note entitled “We are winding down Kindle Vella.”

Of course, I had managed to carefully read the parts pertaining to authors, but apparently skimmed the parts concerning the readers.

So I just had to rewrite my “Note from the author” after Episode 1 on that platform as follows:

Thanks for choosing to read the first episode of Core Haven. I hope you’ll consider downloading the rest of the free episodes (#2-9) of my serialized novel & buying tokens for the remaining 33 for a total cost of about $4.00. If you choose to do so, Kindle Vella’s new guidelines require you to pay for the tokens & download those episodes before Amazon’s December 4th deadline (sorry for letting that detail fly under the radar). The good news is that once you download them all, you’ll be able to read each one at your leisure on the Kindle app (iOS & Android) even after Amazon pulls the plug on Kindle Vella sometime in February 2025.

Oh well, such is life.

I admit, I’ve reached a point in the whole process where watching Kindle Vella sail off into the sunset—more like being pulled under by the Kraken—won’t be so disappointing.

After all, a month or so from now, I’ll be free to publish the recombined novel on the Kindle Store before choosing a new whole project from one of the ideas swirling around the embedded star cluster in the back of my mind.
